Amps & ICE q's

B4 I was 250T

Recommended Posts

Hi all, wanting to get my hands on an amp but don't know much about these things. Can someone clear up their function for me, what I need to look for etc. I am running Pioneer through all my speakers and head unit is also Pioneer so want to keep the same theme running through. What does it mean 4 channel, bridgeable etc? Thanks

4 channel means it has 4 separate outputs.

Bridgeable means you can combine some of the channels, usually in pairs, for more power into less speakers.

i.e. a 2x150w amp may be bridgeable to give 1x500w (I won't bore you with the whole impedance thing)

If you're not running a sub and don't plan to, I'd look for a nice small 4x50wrms amp.

Don't get too hung up on brand, just make sure it's a fairly reputable brand as there's a lot of terrible, terrible Chinese made crap on the market now.

I would personally run a nice 4x50wrms amp for the door speaker and buy a seperate mono block amp for the subwoofer. These are usually a D-Class amp which are great for subs. D-Class amps are very power efficient and handle transients really well. It also becomes less necessary to run a capacitor in the circuit etc etc. I could go on for hours, anyway, these mono block amps are also a single channel (hence mono)and giving th sub its own special amp will improve performance and sound overall.

I currently run a 50RMS x 4 channel Rockford fosgate amp which came underrated from factory and was actually had an output of 60 RMS per channel as per the certificate that came with it.

I run Polk Audio DB6501 (rated at 100RMS) component speakers on 2 channels and run an infinity sub on the other 2 channels bridged. I had to turn the bass down on the sub down because the bass was hitting way too hard for my taste.

Try and get reputed brands because I have run cheap amps which claim to have higher RMS ratings than my Rockford Fosgate amp but don't even come close.

Any pics of the speaker install? Keen to see how you hid the crossovers. Assuming you have a V8 STi.

Yeap I have got a V8 STI. I don't have any pictures of my current setup on my phone but will take some tomorrow for you.

The Polk speakers were quite easy to install as the car came with some Alpines before and already had a custom spacer built that I re-used. I did not want to use the stock tweeter mount because the tweeters came with the appropriate brackets etc to mount on the sail pod and it looks much nicer on the sail pod. Also, I like the tweeter height and placement on the sail pod due to the difference in sound too but everyone has their own preference so try both locations.

The crossovers were mounted inside the door near the bottom so that window glass would not hit. It was a bit tricky to get it right but in the end it was worth it as there is no rattle from inside the door due to the thick tape I put under the crossover before mounting it.

Luckily I have pics of my old bug impreza which I used to own 3 years ago with a similar setup except in this the crossovers are placed outside the door as seen by the images. The tweeter placement is exactly the same as my V8 STI.

There's always alot more space than you'd think behind door cards. Just cut a section of polystyrene out of behind the door card in the old legacy and jammed it in there, worked like a dream, imagine impreza's follow a pretty similar trend. And as much as most people say can the rear speakers i still prefer having a strong backfill.

Got the polk DB's bigger siblings in the current car, front and back, and those things are absolute beasts.

Without wanting to chuck large wads of money at it find something with 4x50-60w. Nothing wrong with going for a matching pioneer one.

And for sub i'd say a 12inch with atleast 400w rms. With the old preboxed 8inch 250w i had i found the rear seats really limited what could be heard from it and needed to be cranked obnoxiously loud to hear the full range.

Also impedances is key with subs, don't go rushing in without really researching what each sub needs and what amps can provide that at the required impedance.

Cheers! That's a huge help :)

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
