Police rader : which bands do they use?

Hello

I just got a Valentine One radar detector and would like to know which bands I can turn off, and which I must leave on. The X band seems to be the one that all the automatic doors operate on, so would love to turn that off as it's ALWAYS going off - so much so that I'm beginning to always ignore the radar around town, which isn't good. Not that I'm speeding around town, but having had a ticket for 52km/h in a 50km/h zone, they're not showing much tolerance...hence the detector.

Any advice of which bands to turn on/off would be MUCH appreciated.

Matthew

The Valentine detects the laser too - I'm most concerned about tickets that have demerit points, so I guess that's anything a cop hands you - i.e. not a speed camera ticket. The way the speed camera beam shoots across the road (rather than down it) means it's apparently very hard to get much warning on. I recently experienced it and didn't receive notification from the detector until I was basically in the camera's zone of operation...so not much point attempting to detect that. Plus, the vans are usually pretty easy to spot.

Then turn all but KA off

The new speed cameras use K-under (Ku) - if you have a very good broadband detector you may get a weak K or Ka alert from them depending on a few factors.

Mobile patrol is Ka centred on 34.7ghz off the top of my head.

I have everything except Laser and Ka turned off. And if you get a laser alert you're usually as good as cooked, unless you got super lucky and picked up a reflection.

Fortunately you don't get a lot of Laser in NZ, I think it's basically cos the cops are too lazy to run it unless they've got one guy hiding in a bush running the gun and a queue of cars/motorbikes down the road to stop drivers... which is not allowed under a General Instruction (covert speed enforcement unless specifically targeting something)

Thanks a bunch guys. I turned off K and X - and note with interest Boon's comments re the new speed cameras operate on Ku. The V1 has Ku detection (off by default I believe) however I think I'll turn that on. That said, if the beam operates as it did with the old cameras, you don't get enough warning until you're snapped...

Re laser : unless I'm mistaken, isn't that when the cop parks sideways to the traffic flow and aims a gun out the window? If so, I've seen that heaps up here.

If you are truely concerned with Laser, you could always install a Jammer.. but that brings a whole new argument of legality, if caught with that in your car.

There's no more grey area on that, it's in the legislation now, Land Transport Act Section 16B:

http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/1998/0110/latest/DLM3820235.html

I think both offences are 50 demerits.

There is an amusing loophole in there where you could theoretically bring a private prosecution against a whole lot of Police and get them all given 50 demerits... mostly due to the poor wording of the law, and the fact that it binds the Crown.

just FYI, was on the motorway recently around 1am and hardly any cars. i approached a bend and as i cam out my v1 picked up two shots of x-band. further down was a cop with a speed gun. no k band at all so im assuming he must have been on x band.

You were picking up the local petrol stations automatic doors or something. The only radars NZP use are the Stalker DSR and Stalker DSR Dual, and they both run Ka.

Yep that's right.

I have the top of the range whistler, not as good as V1 but still does the trick for me.

It has picked up a weak K alert when driving past the new speed cameras and definitely picks up KA 34.7 from the patrol cars.

I've also turned everything but KA and Laser off on mine.

IIRC the new digital cameras use low power K-band not KU.

In-car radar is Ka.

Someone mentioned X - that was de-commissioned years ago, now mainly used by door openers etc.

This forum may be of help...

You should of brought a Escort 9500 ixi, it does auto door auto lock outs based on GPS and frequency of signal, you can also lock out specific signals using the mute button, so pretty much if you have the same signal at the same spot more than 3 times the unit locks it out :) works pretty good, I get bugger all false readings now.

Interesting thing here is the local Caltex just had new doors fitted and the auto door unit is using Ka band

I use escort max radar with No xband, Use to own a 9500ixi and was good aswell. I don't know how the 2 compare side by side test but the max is alot better to look at with its lcd display, I know the 9500 has crappy flimzy pos holder. I use to hate it when the 9500 would come off the screen and bounce off the dash on to the floor while driving and it moved around a lot on the mount like its to heavy for it, Even when i use to leave it on the screen over night come out in the morning and its dropped off lol The max holder is solid as and clamps onto the screen i've never had any issues with it and totally trust it won't fall off no matter how rough the road gets, It does pickup low K camera vans and you know from the frequency displayed if its garage door or camera van.

On another note the redline and V1 are also good radars i was investigating them before buying the max and although i haven't owned either one i like the arrows on the v1 is always good to know where the signal is coming from and the redline for its early warning detection.

I weighed up all options pros and cons and found myself buying a max and haven't looked back

A friend of a friend sounds like Chinese whispers lol.

The videos i've seen of side by side comparasion the max picks up ka band before the v1 there is plenty of youtube comparasions to prove it.

Don't get me wrong the v1 is a good radar but you can't compare it to the max it apples and oranges they are different

Heres a interesting site for comparasion of the 2

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
