Fitting new suspension - GDB WRX

Jonesee

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

So I've got my new Bilstein adjustable suspension ready to go onto my 01 WRX Sti Type RA.

Rather than getting my mechanic to fit it, I was hoping to do this myself - I'm fairly handy on the tools and have a good workshop set up (tools, jack stands, etc).

I need to use my current top hats, which I've been told by Suspension Direct (where I got the suspension) will work fine.

Is this a simple bolt off, bolt on process? Do I need to 'compress' anything (I.e. springs)?

Any tips and advice from people that've done this?

Get the top-hat bolt (the big sucker on the middle of the strut) loose with the struts in the car and the car on the ground. Cracking that sucker with the struts out of the car can be a massive pain.

Some people say you should compress the springs before removing the top-hat but on a standard Subaru strut at full extension the spring shouldn't be under a significant load anyway, it might just "pop" slightly when you get the top-hat nut undone but should be fine (do so at own risk, though!!)

I would use spring compressors for sure. And the easiest and best way to get the nut off is a rattle gun. You can be sure it is properly tight, and that you won't be spinning the shaft excessively which is bad for the seals. You can just ask a local garage to undo them (often for nothing), switch the top hats on the spot, and rattle the nuts back on. Five minutes work once the springs are compressed. Take them away and decompress/ seat the springs again in your own time. My twin cents anyway.

I'm no mechanic, but have swapped shocks loads of times. Its pretty straight forward as described. I'm with GC8E2DD on the spring compressor's, definitely makes life a lot easier. I'd also have to agree on using a rattle gun to loosen the top nut as its rather difficult without one, can't imagine there's not a lot of room (particularly in rear) to loosen it with shocks in the car.

Another point I though was worth mentioning is to ensure the top spring retainer in correctly orientated. I marked mine with a white marker before removing the top hats.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
