2008 5 speed auto vs 2009 lineartronic CVT transmissions

OK, so have decided a Subaru legacy (NOT the outback) wagon will be our next car. Been doing a little research into this and have noticed that from 2009 the transmissions have changed from a 5 speed to a 'lineartronic'. All the reviews I have read suggest that the lineartronics drive very well but die quite early on ie they are smooth and great in the new cars but then become a little dodgy. Motoring guides suggest avoiding lineartronic gearboxes like the plague. So this has us thuinking... maybe we should get a 2008 5 speed box rather than a 2009 based on gear box alone? Does anyone have any comments regarding this? We were looking at buying a car with less than 70K on the clock... but really want carefree motoring... thanks:confused:

Yes I have test driven one... the lineartronic does make a strange noise but drive was silky smooth...

And to Orgasm man above... I have no idea what the abbreviations mean... if I did I probably wouldnt have asked the question I did...

Keep it coming! And please, simple terms are appreciated... I am not a racing enthusiast...

Thx

The Prefacelift gt and 3.0r still have the Stupid Infuriating-drive (aka si-drive)

SI-D means it's a facelift.

The original MY04 BP/BL Legacy had 5 -speed manual or 4-speed auto gearboxes, no SI-D.

NZ GT's also got the full fat 2.0L 206kW motor

SI-D arrived with MY07 as did the 2.5L international motor for NZ GTs and a 5-speed auto.

2007 NZ facelifts retained the 2.0L turbo plus upgraded to 6 speed manual and SI-D. 2.5L motor came with late 07 and 2008 BP/BLs.

I'm sure I've seen late pre-facelift imports with SI-D... I wonder if SI-D works differently or better in late/current model soobies?

Oki, I thought NZ got SID the same time as overseas markets...

Have not seen an NZ new regular Legacy 2.0L T with 6-speed though.

Was never convinced by SID in either Impreza or Legacy.

Anything less than S-sharp made the car feel like is was badly knobbled.

There's probably very few NZ new facelift 2.0L Turbos in manual given the short time they were available before the change to 2.5L and our preference for autos but they're around. I've got a wagon in pearl white. Gearbox is a highlight.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
